My Secrets to Healthy Hair 2022

For 6 years I have been sharing all my haircare tips and tricks, but I am finally putting all of my secrets in one post! So let’s dive in!

Haircare Tips

  1. Avoiding Heat Damage - Avoiding heat damage is one thing I’ve mastered! I know it looks like I use heated tools regularly, but the truth is I don’t. When it comes to straightening or curling my hair, this is something I do once or twice every two months. Heat styling can take a serious toll on your hair, especially if you have curly coloured hair, so when I transitioned to blonde, I knew I had to take a break from using heat frequently. This meant coming up with different hairstyles and using the right tools to help stretch washdays. My must-have styling tools will be linked down below!

  2. Finding your hair porosity - Knowing your hair’s porosity level will help you determine exactly what products will work best for your hair. For example, if your hair has high porosity (meaning your cuticles are open and cannot hold moisture) You’re going to want to look for high moisturizing products and products that can help seal that moisture into your hair. If you have Low porosity (meaning your cuticles are closed and it is difficult for moisture to get in) you’ll want to look for products that are penetrating and will not sit on top of the hair strand (avoid heavy oils like coconut oil or castor oil). Here is a tutorial on how you can determine your hair’s porosity!

  3. A balance between Moisture, Protein, and clarifying products - this is important, especially for my colour/heat styling girls! Heat styling and chemically treating your hair can break down the bonds in your hair, weakening the cuticle which then leads to breakage. To avoid that, you want to find a bond-building product that will help strengthen your hair, along with a moisturizing product that will help keep your hair hydrated! Clarifying your scalp is also really important! Product and oil buildup on your scalp can clog your hair follicles making it difficult for your hair to grow. Adding one clarifying shampoo, once a month (depending on your wash schedule) can help keep your scalp healthy! Links down below!

  4. Nutrition - internal health will play a factor in your hair growth and health. There are so many things that can affect your hair health, PCOS, Postpartum, etc. If you have any underlining health issues, I highly recommend consulting your doctor. Stress, lack of water intake, lack of whole foods, etc can also play a role in your hair health. Please don’t feel like you need to diet. I will never push diet culture, ever. Staying hydrated, and consuming whole food (aka more greens, lean meats, etc) will help nourish your hair. We don’t put food on our hair, we put food in our bodies. Before you add avocado to your hair, add it to your food intake instead!
